Drawworks

The drawworks on a drilling rig is the hoisting machine used for both raising and lower the drilling string. The drawworks reels in and reels out the drilling line. The drilling line is connected to the traveling block and hook which connect to the drill string. The drill string runs over the crown block and setup like a block and tackle pulley system. An electric motor or diesel engine is connected to the drum to reel in the drill line. Gravity combined with the main brake is used to reel out the line.

The main components of a drawworks include:

  1. Drum
  2. Motor(s) or Engine(s)
  3. Reduction Gear
  4. Main Brake
  5. Auxiliary Break
