Rathole

The rathole is the extra depth of the hole at the bottom of the well. It's a hole drilled past the last zone of interest. This hole allows logging tools or completion equipment to fully access the zone of interest as these tools and equipment may be long enough that they need to extend past the zone of interest. The extra hole depth also used in catch any hole fill in dirt or rocks so the last zone can be fully accessed.
